Medical Informatics

We apply information technology to medical care safely and without imposing a burden on doctors or patients. To this end, we conduct research on ubiquitous computing, advanced image and video processing, and user-friendly interface technologies.

Integrated System Design, Embedded Systems

VLSI is a key technology to design integrated systems. In designing integrated systems, we should optimize many metrics such as low power, low energy, high robustness and high performance. This laboratory conducts research concerning integrated system design methodology and design itself.

Laser Engineering

We are actively conducting research related to laser and electrical energy control, for example, development of new lasers, new functional materials by laser treatment, laser peening, and development of fast high-voltage switch using power semiconductors.

Material Science, Material Process Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering

We develop new materials to create new electronic components and also develop technologies to fabricate them easily. We also develop new analytical techniques using these new materials, such as atmospheric analysis and observation of catalyst reactions.

We make practical application of remote sensing technologies that measure the nature of objects from a distance using specific properties such as electromagnetic emissions. We also develop equipment and perform observations and analyses on various subjects, such as phenomena that cause disasters to happen, the Earth’s environment, etc.

We are doing research using techniques that fuse information and knowledge processing technologies with system technologies such as simulation and optimization techniques. Our goal is to enable computers to replace humans for intellectual tasks such as identifying problems and formulating solutions to them.

This lab does research on the fundamentals and potential applications of light, revolving not only around optical communications, but also the development of new lasers that use optical fibers. We also promote development of new optical technologies and enjoy discovering previously unknown phenomena involving light.

My research interests include LED packaging optimal design based on ray-tracing simulation and machine learning, and big-data analysis of a railway telemeter system.

We are advancing research to make practical application of the liquid crystal materials widely used in displays for optical security device and assist device in color discrimination for color vision defect.

We are currently doing research on optical triodes needed in the field of optoelectronics to perform various types of signal processing using optical signals. In the future, our goal is to develop optical computers.

We are addressing research and development on measurement, display, visualization, and information storage technologies based on holography.

We engage in research related to optical measurement technology and optical communication technology, such as optical fiber sensing, which uses optical fibers as sensors and also as communication paths for sensor signals, and optical fiber communication.

Control Theory and its Apprication

Making something such as a robot behave as you want can be described as “control.” We are engaged in theoretical research on control. We are also conducting applied research to control actual ones using computers.

This lab conducts research related to methods to accurately control a diverse range of power systems that use induction motors such as in elevators and high-speed Shinkansen bullet trains. We also study microprocessors embedded in industrial products such as air conditioners.
