1. Restoration of Household Succession in the Late Edo Period Using Documents of Tonoi Chiefs , Yukichika Kawata; Toshio Tanaka , Ikoma Journal of Economics , 21 , 1 , 37 , 104 , 30, Nov. 2023
Summary:Historical materials pertaining to village chiefs in Tonoi village, Hagi Domain (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture) in the late Edo period, are accessible. These manuscripts were prepared manually utilizing archaic characters. We deciphered the manuscripts, created reprints, and compared them to restore the succession of households from 1826 to 1857. We discovered that certain peasant families went extinct while others established a branch family, resulting in consistent population of approximately 80 households during the research periods. Through reprint preparation and comparisons among them, we uncovered the whereabouts of shoji , paper doors that were moved out from a mountain castle in Tonoi around 1600. Regrettably, according to the authors’ investigations, such shoji may no longer exist in Tonoi.

  3. Properties and interpretation of the Skellam model -- a discrete-time contest competition population model , Jurģis Šuba; Yukichika Kawata; Andreas Lindén , AUTHOREA , 6, Apr. 2023
    Summary:
The Skellam model describes discrete-time population dynamics of asingle species assuming uniform (i.e., random or Poissonian) individualdistribution and intraspecific contest competition. Apart from studieson individual-based models derived from first principles, it has rarelybeen applied to ecological research. However, in specific situations, itmay be more appropriate than, for instance, the frequently used Rickermodel. This is derived from assuming scramble competition amongindividuals. In this paper, we offer insight into the first principlesunderlying the Skellam model. In addition, we provide an alternativeparameterization of the model in terms of two commonly used parameters:intrinsic rate of population increase and carrying capacity. In light ofthese findings, the Skellam model may be a useful alternative for arange of purposes where it has previously been overlooked, e.g., infitting population models to time series data.
