The Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ) held its 83rd National Convention online March 18-20, 2021. Two students in the Department of Informatics each won a student encouragement award.

Mizuki Koike, graduate student in Electronic Engineering, wins ITE outstanding student presentation award

On February 27, 2021, an online meeting for presentations of student papers held by the Technical Group on Media Engineering of the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE) awarded Mizuki Koike a prize for outstanding presentation. Koike, a second-year Electronic Engineering major in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, studied informatics as an undergraduate and belongs to the Traffic Informatics Laboratory (supervisor Associate Professor Masahiro Tada).
The title of Koike's presentation was "A study for investigating driving characteristics while using ACC system based on eye tracking device."

Takuto Mibu, doctoral candidate in Science, wins poster award at 1st Asian Conference on Molecular Magnetism

At the 1st Asian Conference on Molecular Magnetism (ACCM) conducted online for four days from March 7, 2021, Takuto Mibu, a second-year doctoral candidate in Science in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, won a Poster Award.
The conference was originally scheduled to be held in March 2020, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It finally took place online.
Professor Masaaki Ohba, professor in Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Kyushu University, served as chairman of the Executive Committee. Taking part in online sessions were 248 participants from 26 countries, including China, India, South Korea, Australia, Poland, the U.K., Russia, Spain, New Zealand, and Singapore. Conference events included keynote lectures, invited lectures, oral presentations, and a poster session.
The poster awards were announced on the final day of the conference. There were 56 candidates and 12 winners. There were four winners from Japan, including Kindai's Takuto Mibu.
Poster title: "Synthesis and properties of Cobalt di-oxolene complexes containing bulky ancillary ligand"

At a conference of the Magnetics Society of the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ) in March 2020, Akihiro Ito, a fourth-year student in the Electronics and Information/Communication Course in the Department of Electric and Electronic Engineering (supervisor Associate Professor Kengo Sugahara), was awarded the Society A Award.

Yusuke Morisawa, associate professor of chemistry, awarded FY2020 NIR Advance Award at 36th Near Infrared Forum

A paper by Yusuke Morisawa, associate professor of chemistry in the Department of Science, entitled "Study for effects of intermolecular interactions in solutions on absorption intensities in the NIR region" was chosen for the FY2020 NIR Advance Award by the Japan Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy (JCNIRS).
The awards ceremony and lecture took place online during the 36th Near Infrared Forum (held November 25-26, 2020). The award is given to outstanding research results concerning near infrared spectroscopy reported (as a research paper, thesis, example of practical application, etc.) during the year in question or the previous 2 to 3 years.
The award went to a pair of papers (1, 2) Morisawa wrote on experimental and theoretical research he conducted that noted the overtones and wavenumbers in near infrared absorption intensities in molecules that had undergone hydrogen bonding.
Absorption intensity is basic data essential to quantitative analysis by spectroscopy. Morisawa's research is invaluable for the development of highly accurate analytical methods for near infrared spectroscopy, which is widely used in non-destructive quantitative analysis.
Dr. Morisawa intends to continue his research in near infrared spectroscopy since it can sensitively capture (reflect) intermolecular interaction.

Mutsumi Imawari, chemistry major, named recipient of FY2020 JCNIRS Student Travel Award at 36th Near Infrared Forum

Fourth-year undergraduate chemistry major Mutsumi Imawari was chosen as recipient of the Japan Council for Near Infrared Spectroscopy's JCNIRS Student Travel Award for the results of her research entitled "Research on aqueous hydrogen bonding in hydrate melts using the NIR method."
The awards ceremony and acceptance speech were conducted online as part of the 36th Near Infrared Forum (November 25-26, 2020).
The award is given to students who wish to give oral presentations on their research findings at the forum and is intended to cover part of their travel expenses. Every year 3 to 4 students whose research reports are judged to be impactful are chosen as presenters.
Imawari's award-winning research concerned changes in hydrogen-bonding of water in "hydrate melt" high-density electrolyte aqueous solutions. It was judged to be important research because of the use the findings could have in electrolyte development and analysis for rechargeable batteries.

Misaki Okita, graduate student in Functional Molecular Chemistry, receives excellent poster award at 10th CSJ Chemistry Festa, 2020

At the Chemical Society of Japan's 10th CSJ Chemistry Festa, held online October 20-22, 2020, Misaki Okita, a major in Functional Molecular Chemistry in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, received a CSJ Poster Presentation Award for Excellent Research.
The title of the winning poster was "Synthesis and evaluation of physical properties of coordination polymers consisting of copper(I) halides and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds."
The judges highly rated the manner in which the poster explained in easy-to-understand fashion extensive content, ranging from a new method for synthesizing coordination polymers and crystalline structure to electrical conductivity and light-emitting characteristics.
